Germany-wide Digitaltag, June 18, 2021
Digital appetizers: from APFELWEIN to ZYPRESSENZWEIG
15.06.2021 | General, Events, Press Releases
At our Germany-wide Digitaltag event, we want to take a broad, interested audience of all ages on a digital journey through the world of words and their history! Using selected examples, the audience will learn what digital and cross-linked dictionaries can do and how they are not only interesting and important for the sciences. For example, we will show what you can find out in the Trier dictionary network, which allows you to search in over 30 dictionaries at the same time: For example, which words were used daily in earlier times but have fallen out of use altogether today? How many words does a person use? What can I learn about dialects in the dictionary network, what about the language of wine growing in Germany? And what can I learn here about Goethe's words and their meanings?
The dictionary network will be relaunched on Digital Day; we will present three exciting aspects in three digital bites. At the end of each of these, there will be a quiz in which visitors can win a surprise.

4 - 4:30 p.m.: 3rd Digital Tidbit: Goethe and the "dog talk" - of dogs and hate speech.
With Michael Niedermeier and Wiebke Schulte (Goethe Dictionary Research Unit, Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities).
Moderation: Claudia Bamberg (Trier Center for Digital Humanities, University of Trier)
That Goethe did not like dogs is also evident in his use of the word “dog talk,” by which he meant something like “Hate Speech”. But what exactly is it all about? Here, visitors will gain insights into Goethe's “dog” words and thus also into the cultural-historical significance of the dog in the 18th century. Hate speech in today's social media will also be discussed.
