In the winter semester 2024/25, eleven students from the Master's degree course in Digital Humanities at Trier University launched the project “Trier Digital - Making Change Visible” under the expert supervision of Dr. Joëlle Weis and Dr. Élodie Ripoll. The aim of the project is to shed light on the transformation of the city of Trier from an interdisciplinary perspective and to open up new perspectives on urban development. In doing so, the students combine questions from the humanities with modern digital methods that reflect the core area of digital humanities.

As part of the project, the students worked in various teams to investigate specific aspects of urban development. This included analysing historical map materials to visualize changes in the city's structure and examining the political discourse that accompanies the city's development. Methods such as quantitative text analysis and topic modeling were also used to identify recurring themes and focal points in the political discourse.

“Trier Digital - Making Change Visible” aims to present urban development in various dimensions. By linking map material, historical images and text analysis, new insights into the development of Trier are offered - from the political discussion to urban planning implementation.

The results of the project are available on the website www.trier-digital.github.io. In addition, the data sets used, program codes and further resources are also made available on the associated Github account. In this way, the project promotes the transparency and reusability of scientific work in the field of digital humanities.eit wissenschaftlicher Arbeit im Bereich der Digital Humanities.

Anyone interested is invited to visit the website and find out about the various aspects of urban development in Trier. The project “Trier Digital - Making Change Visible” offers an innovative and in-depth insight into the city's history and shows how digital methods can help to capture the development of a city from different perspectives.
