On May 15 and 16, 2003, a colloquium on the research project of the University of Trier "The digital German dictionary of the Brothers Grimm: a 'house book' for everyone" will be held in the Academy of Sciences and Literature in Mainz.

The focus of this colloquium is the project, which has been funded by the German Research Foundation at Trier University since November 1st, 1998, to retro-digitize the first edition of the 33-volume German dictionary by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, which is currently in the final phase.

To the program:

In presentations by the project team, the individual work steps on the way from the print version of the dictionary to its electronic publication on CD-ROM and on the Internet are presented, the methods and standards used are discussed and the results are presented. These lectures will be accompanied by short statements from external experts who will shed light on the problems of digitization, coding and electronic provision of basic humanistic works from a linguistic, lexicographical and IT perspective. The topic of the colloquium will be placed in an international context with a lecture on the work on the digital Oxford English Dictionary. In addition, Ecke Bonk will report on the installation he designed for Documenta11 and dedicated to the German dictionary.

The colloquium is organized by the DFG-funded project "The German Dictionary by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm on CD-ROM and on the Internet", the competence center for electronic cataloging and publication processes in the humanities and the Mainz Academy of Sciences and Literature.
