Workshop zur Erforschung literarischer Übersetzungen zwischen Südkorea und Europa

Thema des Workshops ist die Erforschung literarischer Übersetzungen zwischen Südkorea und Europa anhand von Datenbanken und Linked Open Data. Der Workshop findet im Rahmen des Projekts „Knowledge Graphs of Literary Crossings: Modeling European-Korean Literary Translation History Using Linked Open Data” statt, das von der DFG und der Nationalen Koreanischen Akademie im Programm „Initiation of International Collaboration” von 2026 bis 2027 gefördert wird. 

Weitere bilaterale Treffen in Deutschland und in Südkorea sind geplant.

Knowledge Graphs of Literary Crossings: Modeling European-Korean Literary Translation History Using Linked Open Data

The key contribution we aim to make with the ‘Initiation of international collaboration’ funding is to develop a data model and mapping structure that will allow us to combine information from several European and Korean large-scale bibliographic resources in LOD for the first time. This is a prerequisite for the collaborative research we plan to conduct afterwards, in which we will leverage these massive datasets for an investigation into European-Korean literary relationships (with a focus on German and French, on the European side) and aim to show that this relationship is much deeper and more diverse than generally assumed. 

At a time when long-established political, economic and research-oriented alliances are shifting, we believe it is crucial to investigate the history and dynamics of the European-Asian relationship also at the level of cultural and literary identities. Our findings may point us to unsuspected connections at a time when a new, global understanding of cultural relations will be needed, and both Europe and Asia are looking to deepen their respective alliances and relationships. 

This is a joint project led by Christof Schöch at Trier University, Germany (with funding from the DFG) and by Byungjun Kim at the Academy of Korean Studies, Seoul, South Korea (with funding from NPR), and runs from June 2026 to May 2028.
